GA State Of Emergency, Gas Tax Suspension Extended

Georgia officials hope the extension will help with travel and food costs during the Thanksgiving holiday.

ATLANTA, GA — Gov. Brian Kemp renewed Wednesday a state of emergency that extended a gas tax suspension in Georgia due to inflation, the governor's office announced in a news release.

After being renewed a second time, the state of emergency is not set to expire until 11:59 p.m., Nov. 29, pausing gas taxes through Thanksgiving, according to the executive order.

The renewal is set to end the same day as the Georgia General Assembly's scheduled special session, according to the order.

"Continued action by the State of Georgia is necessary to to ensure the restoration of Georgia's social and economic welfare by responding to the ongoing effects of inflation in the state," read the order.

According to the release, state officials hope the extension of the state of emergency and the continued suspension of the gas tax will help Georgians with food and travel costs during Thanksgiving.

“I'm proud this action has helped keep millions of dollars in hardworking Georgians' pockets and look forward to continuing to see that impact with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching," Kemp said in the release. "I'm also grateful for the partnership of the General Assembly as it prepares to enter a special session where legislators will be called on to ratify this measure."

The state average gas price was $2.891 per gallon for regular gas as of Wednesday morning, about 24 cents less than a year ago, according to the gas price monitoring agency AAA.
