GA Gas Prices Surge, Near Record Again As Oil Prices Increase

On Monday, gas averaged $3.83 a gallon in Georgia, up 12 cents from last week, according to GasBuddy.

GEORGIA — Georgia’s gas prices have once again been climbing toward record highs due to rising oil prices.

On Monday, gas averaged $3.83 a gallon in Georgia, according to GasBuddy. Prices are up 2 cents from Sunday, 12 cents from last week, and $1.08 from last year. Gas prices have not gone over $4 since March, according to GasBuddy.

It now costs Georgia motorists $57.45 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline, according to the American Automobile Association, or AAA.

“Georgia motorists saw a jump at the pump this weekend,” said Montrae Waiters, AAA-The Auto Club Group spokeswoman in a statement. “The probable cause for the increase appears to be an uptick in demand and the high price of crude oil, which is stubbornly staying above $100 per barrel. High crude prices will likely contribute to gas prices remaining elevated this week.”

Gov. Brian Kemp signed Georgia House and Senate bills in March to suspend Georgia gasoline taxes until May 31 that will save 29 cents per gallon. Before the bills were signed, Georgia collected a state excise tax of 28.7 cents per gallon on gasoline sales, according to a report from American Petroleum Institute. Georgians were paying 55.95 cents per gallon accounting for all state and federal taxes and fees.

In 2021, during the Colonial Pipeline shutdown, Kemp also suspended the gas tax to provide relief while the company recovered from a cyberattack, reported WAGA-TV.

The average price of a gallon of regular gas Monday across Georgia was:

  • Atlanta: $3.83
  • Fulton County: $3.86
  • Dekalb County: $3.84
  • Gwinnett County: $3.77
  • Forsyth County: $3.77
  • Barrow County: $3.80
  • Cherokee County: $3.77
  • Cobb County: $3.80
  • Paulding County: $3.77
  • Douglas County: $3.78

Nationwide, Georgia’s gas price ranks as the least expensive, according to GasBuddy.

For the third consecutive week, the nation’s average gas price has risen, climbing 13.6 cents from a week ago to $4.31 per gallon on Monday, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

The national average is up 19.6 cents from a month ago and $1.36 per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 22.6 cents in the last week and stands at $5.52 per gallon.

"With the cost of oil accounting for more than half of the pump price, more expensive oil means more expensive gasoline,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “These prices are creeping closer to those record high levels of early March.”
