Citizens in Acworth and Cobb County will be heading to the polls today, and it’s up to each and every voter to make sure he or she is as well-informed as possible about all the issues and candidates on the ballot.

Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, and long lines are anticipated at Cobb’s polling places. Speaking of polling places, check your most recent voter registration information, as your traditional polling place may have changed since the last time you voted.

For your convenience, you can enter your address on the Georgia Secretary of State’s “My Voter Page” website and confirm your proper polling place for today’s election.

Following the closing of polls at 7 p.m., the Georgia Secretary of State’s office will begin tabulating the results and displaying them online.

Cobb County voters will have a United States House of Representatives seat to award, up to three contested state government races to decide, as well as a contested race for a Cobb County commission seat and a Cobb County Board of Education seat.

Voters in Georgia’s 6th Congressional district will choose between Tom Price and Robert Montigel. Voters in the Georgia Senate’s 6th district will face a choice between Hunter Hill and Antron Johnson. The State House seat for District 37 is also up for grabs between Sam Teasley and Bill Bolton.

United States representatives Barry Loudermilk and David Scott, State senators Bruce Thompson, Judson Hill, Michael Rhett, Lindsey Tippins, and Horacena Tate, State representatives Bert Reeves, Ed Setzler, Earl Ehrhart, David Wilkerson, Erica Thomas, Michael Smith, Stacey Evans, Sharon Cooper, Don Parsons, Matt Dollar, John Carson, Sheila Jones, and Roger Bruce, and Solicitor General Barry Morgan are all running unopposed.

Voters in Cobb County Commission District 1 will choose between Bob Weatherford and Derrick Crump, while JoAnn Birrell is running unopposed in Commission District 3. The only contest race on the Cobb County School Board is Post 2, between Susan Thayer and Kenya Pierre. School board members David Chastain and Scott Sweeney are running unopposed, as is Cobb County Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor Fred Snell. Alan Levine is running unopposed for the unexpired term of Brett Bittner on the Marietta School Board.

Cobb County voters will also vote on a proposed six-year sales tax increase that is estimated to generate $750 million for the county and will be used for several projects including a retention plan for officers with the Cobb County Police Department.
