The City Council on Monday unanimously passed the second reading of an ordinance to allow package sales, which will include growlers.

Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said Monday's action by city leaders makes Alpharetta the second city in Georgia to allow package sales at these establishments.

The first, he said, was Savannah.

The two brewpubs currently operating in the city are expected to have the licenses granting the sales by Friday, Drinkard added.

Growlers are sealed, air-tight containers that allow residents to take home malt beverages drawn from a barrel, cask, tank or keg at licensed establishments. The containers cannot exceed 68 ounces, and they must be securely sealed and removed from the premises in its original condition.

5 Seasons North, located 3655 Old Milton Parkway, praised the City Council's decision.

"It is hard to explain how much this small win means to us," the company said on its Facebook page. "Years of effort by so many people. Thanks to the City Council (particularly Chris Owens), the mayor and everyone who has contributed to the effort of making positive change to the beer laws here in GA. And to be clear, the fight goes on. But it was a wonderful sight to see an elected legislative body representing a small community who simply said we want to do the right thing and then found a reasonable solution."
