Couple Uses Car To Stop Runaway Vehicle Of Driver Suffering Seizure

Risking injury, the husband and wife positioned their vehicle to stop the car traveling uncontrollably along S.R. 400 in Alpharetta.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- A couple recently set aside their own safety to help save the life of a motorist suffering a medical emergency in Alpharetta.

The husband and wife were traveling northbound on S.R. 400 and observed a vehicle "swerving erratically across all lanes of travel," the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said.

A male driver, police said, was seen slumped over his steering wheel and appeared to be having a seizure.

The wife called 911 while the couple witnessed the driver slow his vehicle down and then accelerate at a high speed, the agency added.

The driver in distress lost control of the vehicle and veered off the roadway, striking the left guardrail numerous times. The vehicle continued to travel down the shoulder of GA-400.

Risking personal injury, the couple maneuvered their vehicle to physically strike the runaway vehicle and forced it to stop. Alpharetta police and fire units responded to the scene and rushed the motorist to a local hospital.

"Thanks to the bravery of the assisting motorists and other passersby who stopped to help, no members of the public were injured and the driver who was in medical distress is expected to fully recover," the agency said.

While it doesn't advise citizens to place themselves in grave danger, law enforcement officials say they are "grateful for the act of bravery and kindness shown by the concerned citizens for a person in distress."
