Milton Avenue Parking Deck Approved By Alpharetta Leaders (UPDATED)

The four-level parking deck will be situated along Milton Avenue west of South Main Street.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The Alpharetta City Council on Monday approved a proposal from a company to design as well as build a four-level parking deck along Milton Avenue.

Council members approved the agreement with The Christman Company for the project for $6.92 million. Additionally, $150,000 was allocated towards design and the construction of a raised intersection at Roswell and Old Roswell streets.

City staff initially proposed a plan that would call for a three-level deck, but Council members decided to add a fourth level, which bumped up the price tag. The final vote was 6-1, with Mayor David Belle Isle in opposition.

The parking deck would be located at 90/92 Milton Avenue, and is one of two locations the Council approved in February for the design-build process. The other deck will go on an existing public parking lot on Old Roswell Street. That parking deck will include 173 spaces.

Funding for both projects would come from proceeds of the sale of property at City Center as well as from any capital funds that have not been allocated, the city previously told Patch.

According to city documents, the four-level deck will feature an interior ramp design, 263 parking spaces, 9-feet-by-19-feet parking stalls and 22-feet driving aisles. The anticipated schedule to complete the parking deck would be nine months from the date in which the notice to proceed is issued.

"The Christman Team understands the significance of completing the work in a timely manner as well as striving to have the deck completed prior to the Taste of Alpharetta in May," the city notes.

The raised intersection project would be constructed in conjunction with the parking deck.

"Public Works receives numerous calls concerning the speed of vehicles along Roswell Street in this area," the city added. "Additionally, due to the speed of the vehicles and grade of Roswell Street, the crosswalk on Roswell Street needs to be on the high end for visibility and safety reasons. Constructing a raised intersection will slow vehicles and improve pedestrian safety at this intersection."

Once a formal design is complete, the company will give Alpharetta staff a formal construction proposal with detailed breakdowns.
