SAR Piedmont Chapter plants Liberty Tree in Ohio

On June 10th, the Piedmont Chapter (in cooperation with the Ohio Society of SAR and the Rufus Putman Chapter in Zanesville Ohio) a “Liberty Tree” was planted in New Concord, Ohio on a Centennial Farm. Representing the Piedmont Chapter was Al Finley (past President, and a dual member of the Rufus Putman Chapter), and representing the Rufus Putman Chapter was Bill Finley, President of Rufus Putman (and a distant cousin of Al), who is a dual member of the Piedmont Chapter here in Roswell; a dual member of the Ben Franklin chapter in Columbus Ohio ; as well as the Saramana chapter in Sarasota, Fla. . Also, John Swisher from Rufus Putman was in attendance.

Two DAR chapters were also involved in the ceremony : Pat Smith for the Martha Stewart Bulloch Chapter here in Roswell, Georgia.; Also, Bernie Litt and Susan Ballentine from the Anna Asbury Stone Chapter Ohio DAR Society, located in Cambridge, Ohio

The farm has been in the Finley-Litt family for 100 years. Al Finley (past President of the Piedmont Chapter) and Bernie Litt (his sister). The Finley clan are members of the First Families of Ohio. Guernsey county is the resting place (6 miles from this farm) of an ancestral grandfather who served with George Washington at Valley Forge. There were 13 people in attendance.

The Liberty Tree (1646–1775) was a famous elm tree that stood in Boston near Boston Common, in the years before the American Revolution. In 1765, colonists in Boston staged the first act of defiance against the British government at the tree. The tree became a rallying point for the growing resistance to the rule of Britain over the American colonies, and the ground surrounding it became known as Liberty Hall. In 1775 the British had enough of these rebellious rallies at the Liberty Tree and had it cut down.
