OSHA investigates construction accident that injured worker in Athens (onlineathens.com) — A construction worker was seriously injured August 17 at a bridge project along the Athens Perimeter near Atlanta Highway, and federal OSHA officials have now opened a formal investigation. Athens-Clarke firefighters and Piedmont Athens Regional medical staff spent about two hours freeing the man after his leg became trapped in an auger inside a heavy equipment bucket.
   

2. Athens apartments \u200bfor rent saw slight price decreases since last July (onlineathens.com) — If you're renting in Athens, median apartment prices dipped slightly in July, with typical listings now at $1,578, about 15% below the Georgia state median. One- and two-bedroom units are both down from June and from last July, and Athens rents remain well below national averages, according to new data from rental marketplace Zumper.
   

3. UGA researchers develop way to estimate shark age using DNA analysis (wsbtv.com) — UGA scientists in Athens have created a DNA-based method to estimate shark ages without harming the animals, using epigenetic "clocks" instead of killing sharks to count growth rings. Tested on zebra sharks in southeastern aquariums, the technique could transform marine conservation by revealing population age structures and improving protection strategies for vulnerable species.

Sneak of the Week: Michael Guthrie Band, "Stop and Go" (culturesonar.com) — Athens music fans get a deep dive into the Michael Guthrie Band, one of the city's original underground power‑pop heroes from the famed late '70s and early '80s scene. The piece revisits their blistering track "Stop and Go," their DIY album Direct Hits, and Guthrie's 2025 Athens show celebrating 60 years of making music.
   

5. Athens GA Corps History (salvationarmyusa.org) — A new history of The Salvation Army in Georgia traces how the movement grew from rough beginnings on Atlanta streets in 1890 to a statewide network that reached Athens in 1916. Today, the organization runs dozens of Corps, shelters, thrift stores, and social service programs across Georgia, relying heavily on community donations to keep helping neighbors in need.
