• Dog beaten, dragged to death near UGA campus (wsbtv.com) — Police say a dog was brutally beaten and killed near the University of Georgia campus in Athens, leading to a felony aggravated animal cruelty charge against a man already on probation. Officers recovered the dog's body, seized three other dogs linked to him for care, and barred him from UGA property, while the case and necropsy findings remain pending.
   

• Critzer named head of UGA Department of Food Science and Technology (morningagclips.com) — A new permanent head has been named for the University of Georgia's Department of Food Science and Technology in Athens, shaping how the program will grow and serve students here. • Felony conviction clouds District 47 Senate race in Georgia (onlineathens.com) — A state Senate race affecting parts of Clarke County is in turmoil after Democratic challenger Justin Gillespie was convicted of child cruelty and battery and sentenced to prison, likely disqualifying him from the ballot. His name will probably still appear in November, but officials say any votes wouldn't count, while incumbent Frank Ginn weighs his options and Gillespie's Athens-based attorney has not commented.
