GA Coronavirus: More Deaths, More Hospitalized On Reopening Day

As of Friday afternoon, there have been a total of 892 deaths from coronavirus in Georgia, and more than 4,000 hospitalized by the virus.

ATLANTA, GA — Friday is Georgia's soft reopening, despite controversy around Gov. Brian Kemp’s statewide decision. Hair salons, gyms, bowling alleys and more have opened their doors to customers this weekend, even as the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths continue to climb upward.

As of noon Friday, the growing toll of the coronavirus outbreak in Georgia included 20 more deaths, the Georgia Department of Public Health released in its daily report. The updated numbers reflect an increase of 635 cases from noon on Thursday, bringing the total to 22,147 coronavirus cases statewide, and a total of 892 deaths. Of that total, 4,221 — or about 19 percent — are hospitalized. The total number of deaths from coronavirus recorded is about 4 percent of the total number of cases reported.

Most of the top 10 counties with the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths are in the metro Atlanta area, with Fulton County still first for cases with 2,468. Dougherty County, though, which has the third highest number of cases at 1,487, has the highest death count at 108.

Other counties in the top five are DeKalb at second, with 1,709 cases and 35 deaths; Gwinnett at fourth, with 1,366 cases and 46 deaths; and Cobb at fifth with 1,343 cases and 69 deaths. Rounding out the top 10 are Hall, Clayton, Henry, Cherokee and Sumter counties.

Of Georgia's coronavirus cases, 62 percent are between ages 18 and 59, while those above the age of 60 make up 34 percent. People up to age 17 represent 2 percent of cases, and the remaining percentage of cases have unknown ages.

Commercial laboratories have conducted 100,070 tests, and 20,832 came back positive for COVID-19. Among the Georgia Department of Health's 7,106 completed tests, 1,315 came back positive.
