Jamie Foxx Speaks Out Since Atlanta Hospitalization

"The Burial" actor says he "saw the tunnel but not the light" during a health scare in Atlanta earlier this year.

LOS ANGELES — In an emotional speech since being hospitalized in Atlanta, Jamie Foxx told a crowd this week he was unable to walk six months ago.

The "Strays" actor suffered a medical scare in April, his family revealed, while in Atlanta reportedly filming "Back in Action" for Netflix.

Foxx accepted Monday the Vanguard Award at the Critics Choice Association's Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements in Los Angeles. The event was reportedly Foxx's first major public appearance since his hospitalization.

The award was presented to him by famed actress Jurnee Smollett. Foxx did not detail the nature of his medical scare in his speech, shared on his Instagram and via Critics Choice Awards on Twitter.

"I cherish every single minute, now," Foxx said in his acceptance speech. "It's different. ... I wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy 'cause it's tough when it's almost over, when you see the tunnel. I saw the tunnel. I didn't see the light. It was hot in that tunnel, too. I don't know where I was going."

Foxx on Instagram thanked the Critics Choice Movie Awards for his accolade, noting the love he felt in the room was amazing.

"When @tarajiphenson said 'take your time Jamie ,' I knew my heart was gonna be ok! #nobaddays," Foxx wrote.

He received written support from celebrities Busta Rhymes, Sterling K. Brown, Stephanie Mills, Nick Cannon, Kim Fields, Elise Neal, D.C. Young Fly, Bresha Webb, Octavia Spencer, Erica Campbell, Ryan Cameron, Al B. Sure and Fat Joe.

In Foxx's latest work, the Academy Award winner stars as attorney Willie Gary in "The Burial" on Amazon Prime Video. According to IMDB, the newly released film is based on true events and also stars fellow Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones, who plays Jeremiah O'Keefe.

The plot is centered on Gary's ability to help save O'Keefe's family business. The dramatic film tackles race, power, and injustice, according to IMDB.
