Tornado Confirmed Near Atlanta Airport: NWS

The strength of the tornado is not known as of late Thursday afternoon.

ATLANTA, GA — A tornado was confirmed to be in the area of the Hartsfield-Jackson International Atlanta Airport around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, weather officials told Patch.

It is unknown how strong the tornado was, and if there was any damage, according to the National Weather Service's Peachtree City Office.

Delays of up to an hour for departing flights were reported at Atlanta Airport, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. Fights arriving at the airport were also delayed by approximately an hour.

Metro Atlanta was under a severe thunderstorm warning that cleared at 4:15 p.m.

"A Tornado Warning for a TORNADO ON THE GROUND until 4:15 pm," Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management officials warned residents in a tweet. "Seek shelter in an interior room or basement now. This includes central Fulton and the cities of Atlanta, East Point, College Park, and Hapeville."

The area is also under a wind advisory and tornado watch.
