📰 News we're reading

1. Board of Zoning Appeals vote in favor of five Habitat for Humanity home projects (theaugustapress.com) — Augusta's Board of Zoning Appeals has cleared the way for five new Habitat for Humanity homes in Olde Town and Harrisburg by approving key setback and lot-size variances. The board also okayed a major rebuild of the longtime RaceWay gas station at Washington Road and Stevens Creek Road, while delaying a Druid Park Avenue townhome request until September.

2. Augusta Nonprofit Launches Mobile Laundry Truck to Triple Homeless Services (wgac.com) — A local nonprofit, Compass for Hope, is expanding its Sunday laundry and hygiene services near the new Augusta Arena by converting a donated box truck into a mobile laundry facility, nearly tripling capacity for people experiencing homelessness. The group still needs $20,000–$30,000 to finish the build-out and is asking Augusta residents for donations and volunteers to keep from turning people away.

3. Augusta commissioners honor late museum chief Nancy Glaser (wrdw.com) — Augusta commissioners paused their meeting for a moment of silence honoring Nancy Glaser, the longtime executive director of the Augusta Museum who died unexpectedly at 76. Glaser spent more than two decades preserving local history, supporting Richmond County students and the James Brown Academy of Musik, and was recently honored with a memorial and a dedicated day of remembrance.

4. Influential Augusta leader Charles W. Walker Sr. dies at 78 (augustachronicle.com) — Longtime Augusta power broker Charles W. Walker Sr., a businessman and Georgia's first Black state Senate majority leader, has died at 78. Raised in Burke County before moving to Augusta's Laney-Walker neighborhood, he built a multimillion-dollar business network and shaped local politics for decades, even as his legacy was complicated by federal convictions and prison time.

5. Augusta commission updates its meeting policies, decorum rules for speakers (wjbf.com) — If you speak at Augusta Commission meetings, new rules will shape how. Commissioners approved stricter decorum policies that ban signs and audience outbursts, and some pushed to limit how often residents can address the same topic, though others opposed restricting public access. Residents can still return regularly as long as they change subjects.
