📰 News we're reading

1. Augusta's former Terrace Manor Elementary poised for second chapter (augustachronicle.com) — Terrace Manor Elementary in Augusta, closed in 2023, is closer to becoming a combined adult day program and afterschool center for children with special needs, pending an Augusta Commission rezoning vote on Oct. 20. The proposed project would repurpose the 12-acre campus to serve up to 300 adult clients plus local youth, raising questions about how different programs will safely share the space.

2. Augusta Captain D's killer convicted after jealous rage shooting (theaugustapress.com) — A Richmond County jury has sentenced a man to life without parole for killing an Augusta resident inside the Captain D's on Wrightsboro Road, closing a high-profile 2022 case. Augusta's district attorney highlighted the victim's role as a local businessman and warned that prosecutors will aggressively pursue gun violence. The conviction may bring some closure to those who knew the popular restaurateur and bar owner.

3. Richmond County reaches record graduation rate, but 334 students did not finish within four years (wjbf.com) — Richmond County schools in Augusta just hit a record 84.2% four-year graduation rate for the Class of 2026, but 334 students still didn't finish on time. District leaders explain how they track at-risk students from ninth grade, expand tutoring, summer school, and fifth-year options, and work school-by-school to close gaps while keeping academic standards strong.

4. Thousands of rubber ducks help Augusta children sleep easier (augustachronicle.com) — A recent Duck Dash on the Augusta Canal raised more than $205,000 to buy beds and safe sleep spaces for Augusta-area children through the Family YMCA's A Place to Dream program. Thousands of sponsored rubber ducks raced at Savannah Rapids Park, turning a fun fall festival into real help for local families who lack basic sleeping arrangements.

5. Mobile AI, manufacturing lab visits Georgia Cyber Center (wrdw.com) — A 53-foot Georgia AIM Mobile Studio brought hands-on AI and manufacturing technology to the Georgia Cyber Center in downtown Augusta, giving local students and workers a chance to try drones, robotic arms, and 3D printers. Augusta University's cyber center director says this kind of exposure helps residents see modern, higher-tech career paths. The traveling lab will continue visiting schools across Georgia to broaden access to these skills.
