Police Officer Injured In Ice-Related Crash

The Atlanta officer was working an earlier wreck when a vehicle exiting from Ga. 400 skidded out of control on the ice and snow.

ATLANTA, GA — An Atlanta police officer was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being hit by a car skidding on the icy road near Lenox Square Mall.

The female officer was in the median of Lenox Road at about 9:50 a.m. working an earlier accident, according to Atlanta Police Department spokesman Officer Donald Hannah. She was standing next to a parked SUV that was hit by another vehicle trying to turn off of the Ga. 400 exit ramp, Hannah said.

The vehicle trying to exit "failed to negotiate the turn due to snow and ice-covered roads," Hannah said in an email.

After being hit, the SUV slid into the officer, knocking her onto the ground. She was able to get to her police radio before a witness came to help her and used her radio to call for help, according to Hannah.

The officer was "in considerable pain" and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, he said. She was listed Wednesday morning in stable condition. The driver of the vehicle that hit the SUV was charged with failing to maintain a lane.
