Tex McIver Murdered His Wife, Diane McIver, Two Years Ago

The events of two years ago today set in motion a series of events that resulted in Atlanta's highest-profile murder trial in recent memory.

ATLANTA, GA — Prominent business executive Diane McIver was shot to death by her husband two years ago today, Sept. 26, 2016, setting in motion a series of events that eventually became Atlanta's highest-profile murder trial in recent memory. Claud "Tex" McIver, her husband and a high-powered Atlanta attorney himself, was eventually convicted of murdering her and is now serving a lifetime prison sentence without the possibility of parole. Diane McIver, 63, was killed when Tex McIver shot her in the back as the couple was driving near Piedmont Park in Midtown.

McIver claimed he accidentally shot his wife when he dozed off in their SUV with a gun in his lap. According to police, McIver was in the back seat of the SUV, while his wife was in the front passenger seat of the car. The couple was being driven by a family friend.

Tex McIver, who said he had the gun out because he was afraid of carjackers, was initially charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor reckless conduct. But a Fulton County grand jury indicted him on malice murder and six other charges in connection to the shooting, charges on which he was eventually found guilty.
