Outpouring of Support for Mother Battling Flesh-Eating Bacteria

A summer swimming team from Dacula is helping raise money for Cindy Martinez, the local woman who has been battling flesh-eating bacteria since late May.

When the Daniel Park Twisters take on the Wild Timber of Sugar Hill Thursday night, meet organizers say the kids will be swimming for Cindy. All of the proceeds from the event will go to the family to help offset medical and after-care expenses.
Martinez, the mother of two and wife of Gwinnett County Police officer David Martinez, has been in the Gwinnett Medical Center since she went to the emergency room on May 25 with severe pain in her left shoulder.

Martinez, who was diagnosed with with necrotizing fasciitis and myositis, and has already had several surgeries, faces the possibility of needing amputations of her feet and hands due to the bacteria. Doctors are not sure how the bacteria entered her body.
David Martinez told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution his wife was improving and was in stable condition Sunday.
There has been an outpouring of support for the family since news broke last week. The “Cindy Martinez Family Fund”on GoFundMe had raised more than $50,000 (of a $500,000 goal) as of Monday afternoon.

The Thursday swimming event begins at 5 p.m.
Proceeds from concession sales (burgers, pizza, candy, baked potatoes, nachos) and gift-basket raffles will go to the family.
