UPC Code Bandit Suspected in Walmart Theft

A man who has been using fake UPC scan codes to steal merchandise was almost nabbed turning the trick at the Walmart on Sardis Church Road.

The man was already on a company-wide BOLO at Walmart before he entered the local store on March 3. According the Gwinnett County incident report, the loss prevention officer recognized the man and followed him in the store.

The man had a history of attaching a UPC code to items, then scanning them for a much lower price.

The employee did not see the man change the UPC code on the products he selected — a dog crate and two car power inverters — before he went through the self-serve checkout.

But the man ended up paying $16.91 for what would have cost $65.84.

The Walmart employee said that is the exact way the man has been stealing at other stores. The Walmart BOLO said a Stockbridge, Ga., detective identified the suspect as David Allen Nash.

The Gwinnett Police officer did not have enough evidence to obtain a warrant for Nash.
