2 Charged With Entering Auto In Canton

Police were tipped off after a resident called 9-1-1 to report two suspicious men looking into cars in the Cherokee Overlook neighborhood.

CANTON, GA — Two men have been charged with entering auto after a resident called police to report unusual behavior in the Cherokee Overlook neighborhood in Canton. Officers with the Canton Police Department were dispatched around 2:13 a.m. Dec. 29 in response to a call of two "suspicious males" looking into vehicles on Cherokee Overlook Drive, the department said.

Those officers arrived and located one person who matched the description provided by the resident who called 9-1-1. After speaking with that person, an officer "recognized him as a passenger in a vehicle the Georgia State Patrol had stopped" on Dec. 28, 2017, the department added.

As the investigation continued, the officer also noted the other suspect associated with the entering autos was also inside the vehicle stopped by the trooper on the previous day.

The first detained suspect was initially charged with loitering and prowling and transported to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. As detectives picked up the case, they conducted additional interviews and collected evidence that allowed them to secure warrants for 19-year-old Samuel Jason Daniel of Dacula and Desmon Stanley, 21, of Canton, on entering auto charges.

“We are grateful members of the community were watching out for each other when they observed these suspects in the neighborhood and called 9-1-1," said Police Chief Mark Mitchell. "I am proud of the quick work of our officers and detectives to bring this investigation to a successful resolution. This is another great example of what can happen when citizens and law enforcement work together to improve the quality of life in our city.”
