Police Identify Drivers Killed in Fiery Crash

The crash took place early Saturday morning on Wade Green Road south of Highway 92.

ACWORTH, GA -- A fiery head on collision took the lives of two motorists early Saturday morning in southwest Cherokee County.

Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the scene shortly after 6 a.m. on Wade Green Road near Oak Lane, which is situated south of Highway 92.

Lt. Jay Baker, spokesperson with the agency, said a preliminary indication shows a Ford Ranger traveling northbound on Wade Green Road "crossed over into the southbound lanes" and struck a Honda Civic.

After crashing into the Civic, the truck "overturned several times before coming to a rest and catching on fire," a spokesperson with the Georgia State Patrol said.

The Ford Ranger caught fire and was fully engulfed by the time deputies arrived at the scene of the crash. Crews with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services had to extinguish the fire.

"It's a bad one," Baker said, referring to the fatal collision.

The driver of the truck, identified as Benjamin R. Spotts, 21, Woodstock, and the Civic, 21-year-old Danielle L. Thomas of Acworth, were both pronounced dead at the scene, the Georgia State Patrol added.

The crash remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
