2-Vehicle Crash Sends 5 Motorists To Hospital

Two children and three adults all suffered various injures in the accident, which was reported on Cumming Highway near Canton.

CANTON, GA -- A total of five people were injured in a two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon in Cherokee County, including two children and an adult who had to be airlifted to an Atlanta hospital.

Units with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the crash around 4:30 p.m. May 2 on S.R. 20/Cumming Highway at Eagles Nest Drive near Canton.

Crews arrived on the scene to find a silver Kia Optima and gray Buick Enclave both damaged extensively due to the collision. Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said it appears one vehicle was traveling eastbound "crossed the center line and struck the vehicle traveling westbound head on."

The occupants of the Optima had the most serious injuries. A 41-year-old male, who was in the front passenger seat, told emergency personnel he had no feeling from his waist down, said Cherokee fire spokesperson Tim Cavender.

He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta by helicopter. The two kids in the car, a 10-year-old boy who had a possible broken ankle and a 5-year-old girl with abdominal pain, were both transported by ambulance to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, Cavender added.

Additionally, the 66-year-old male driver and another woman in the back seat were transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for evaluation.

The driver of the Buick, a 40-year-old male, was not injured. Baker, who told Patch the injuries don't appear to be life-threatening, said the accident remains under investigaiton by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit.
