3 Charged With Burglary In Canton

The suspects were apprehended at a Kroger store while trying to cash out a large amount of change allegedly stolen from a house.

CANTON, GA — An observation made by a Kroger store manager helped police arrest three people accused of breaking into a home on Thursday in Canton.

The suspects, 22-year-old Devonte Atrion Scott of Waleska, Terrell Nathan Williams, 18, of Canton and 17-year-old Madison Fuller of Canton, were all arrested Thursday at the store on Marietta Highway and have been charged with residential burglary, the Canton Police Department said.

Officers with the agency were dispatched to a 9-1-1 call at a home in the 100 block of Diamond Ridge Avenue. They arrived at the house and met with a teenage girl who "observed several suspicious subjects at the front door of her residence," Canton police said. The teen ran upstairs to hide from the three individuals.

An officer called several stores in the area and asked if they have seen any customers bringing in large amounts of coins to cash at their locations. Just before 8:30 p.m., a manager at Kroger at 4045 Marietta Highway called police to notify them of two men who were "cashing out a large amount of change at their store."

Additional information provided by dispatchers revealed those two men matched the description of the suspects allegedly involved in the burglary. Officers arrived at the store and detained the two men as well as a woman who was waiting in the driver's seat of a car in the parking lot.

Detectives confirmed the containers from the burglary were inside the vehicle the three suspects tried to leave in as officers arrived at the store. The suspects were transported back to Canton police headquarters to speak with detectives who responded to the burglary. They were all later charged in connection with the burglary at the house on Diamond Ridge Avenue.

"I am extremely proud of the hard work and quick proactive thinking of our officers and detectives,"said Canton Police Chief Mark Mitchell. "We are also grateful for our working relationship with the staff of the Kroger on Marietta Highway. Their willingness to get involved was key to the apprehension of the suspects involved in this case.”

Canton police note the investigation remains active and anyone with information should reach out to the agency using its Facebook page or by calling 770-720-4883.
