Liberty Elementary School accepted the School Bell Award by the Georgia Association for Elementary School Principals at its Fall Conference on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 in St. Simon Island. This distinguished honor is presented to 10 schools in Georgia each year in recognition of outstanding programs in the area of curriculum and organizational leadership.
Liberty ES was selected for this honor based on its outstanding initiative, “Implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) School-wide Program.”
“Liberty Elementary has adopted a different philosophy for the implementation for RTI, which includes an active role for staff, students, parents, and community. We have assigned staff members who serve on the RTI committee for each grade level. Monthly meetings are conducted to improve the process and strategies used. Each team member reports directly to the lead counselor who in turn reports directly to the principal. Parents are encouraged to utilize the materials sent home from the RTI committee for additional practice,” Principal Dr. Nicole Holmes said. “It is a priority for this staff to provide parents with the support needed at home. This method has been well received by the teachers and parents.”

The school’s RTI (Response to Intervention) Strategy Team was presented with the 2011 SSTAGE Star Award for Promising Practices at the Elementary Level in the State of Georgia. Liberty ES team members also served as keynote speakers during the conference and spoke on “Collaboration, Cooperation, and Effective Communication to Improve RTI within the Elementary School.”
