Candidates Spend Very Little in Canton Special Election

Farris Yawn has reported contributions and expenditures while Jim Busi has declared he will not accept or spend any campaign-related money.

The special election fill the Canton City Council Ward 3 seat is not garnering much in the form of campaign contributions and expenditures.

Both challengers Farris Yawn and Jim Busi have turned in their campaign disclosure reports for the Oct. 25 reporting period. Both men are vying to replace Glen Cummins, who resigned the seat after he was appointed city manager.

Yawn reported collecting $3,450 during the reporting period, bringing his total contributions to $5,965. Yawn has spent $2,478.45 on his campaign so far. That leaves the candidate with $3,216.55 in the bank.

Yawn has garnered the support of many well-known figures, including Marietta-based Barnes Law Group — the law firm of former Governor Roy Barnes — at $500; former Canton City Attorney Billy Hasty, Jr. at $250; the campaign of District 1 County Commissioner Harry Johnston at $200; Bill McGruder at $250; Judy Bishop at $250; the campaign fund of Mayor Gene Hobgood at $1,000; Dennis Burnette at $250; and WCK Properties LLC at $250.

Busi did not report any contributions or expenditures, as he signed an affidavit affirming he will not accept during the election cycle a combined total of $2,500 in contributions or $2,500 in expenses.

If he accepts the $2,500 limit on either accepting contributions or incurring expenses exceeding $2,500, but do not accept contributions or produce expenses exceeding a combined $5,000, he will have to file disclosures for the June 30 and Oct. 25 reporting periods.
