Canton Police Roll Out 'More Fluid' Ticket Writing Device

The device allows officers to scan a person's driver's license and it automatically populates fields needed to write a warning or citation.

The Canton Police Department is embracing new technology designed to make ticket writing ”more fluid” for Municipal Court officials and law enforcement officers.

The ticket writing device will allow “officers to be more efficient and decrease their time spent on a traffic stop,” Canton police said. The device works by scanning a motorist’s driver’s license and automatically populating fields needed to write a warning or citation.

A small printer inside the patrol car prints out the ticket. Canton police say this will also ensure tickets “are readable and problems from illegible writing will be eliminated.”

“There are a lot of advantages to the device, but maybe the most important one is officer safety,” the agency said. “Officers have been entering information...(from) driver’s licenses into the car computer. The process takes the officer’s concentration and eyes off...their surroundings, exposing them to dangers around them.”
