Canton Rotary Club Recognizes Habitat Homeowner With Community Service Award

The Rotary Club of Canton put the spotlight on community servants of Cherokee County at its annual Community Service Awards Program on March 14. The award recipients were recognized for their service in providing affordable housing, supporting athletic competition for disabled youth, promoting business growth, and advocating for public education.

The individuals being recognized received the Lamar Haley Community Service Award, named after an outstanding Canton Rotarian and community leader who died after a tragic automobile accident. The award is given annually in memory of his legacy of exemplary community service to citizens who have exemplary volunteer service. Recipients may be non-Rotarians or Rotarians.

Habitat for Humanity – North Central Georgia was thrilled to learn that one of its homeowners, Melanie Edwards, was selected as one of the recipients of the Lamar Haley Community Service Award.

Melanie Edwards gives back to the affiliate through her service on the Cherokee County Family Selection Committee for Habitat-North Central Georgia.

Melanie was described by Committee Chair Wendy Wagner as "an invaluable member of the committee" whose experience as a homeowner allows her "to provide prospective homeowners and applicants with much needed guidance at application meetings as well as home visits."

According to Wagner, Melanie "provides a unique talent for identifying need, willingness to partner and whether or not she feels an applicant is looking for a hand out or hand up. She has a great sense of gauging those intangible aspects of potential homeowners."
