Canton Waffle House Employee Tests Positive For Coronavirus

An employee of a Waffle House in Cherokee County tested positive for coronavirus, Waffle House, Inc. told media outlets Tuesday.

CANTON, GA — A Canton Waffle House has closed Tuesday after an employee tested positive, the business told media outlets.

WGCL-TV reported that the employee last worked March 1 at the restaurant, 1849 Marietta Highway in Canton. The station said the employee has been released from a hospital, and is now under quarantine.

WSB-TV said that 12 other employees who worked at the same Waffle House are now under self-quarantine until Saturday, and the restaurant is closed. So far, officials told WSB-TV that none of those employees have showed symptoms of the illness.

Waffle House officials said they have been working with the Cherokee County Health Department, and will continue to do so. Additionally, the business said it is implementing enhanced sanitization measures at all restaurants.

“We continue to work with state and local health department personnel for guidance," Waffle House officials said in a statement to media. "Our main concern has been, and will continue to be, the safety of our associates and customers.”

This is the only coronavirus case at any Waffle House location currently, officials said.

As of Tuesday morning, there are six presumed positive cases of the coronavirus, and 11 confirmed cases of the disease in Georgia, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Among those cases is a Fulton County Schools employee who tested positive for coronavirus, causing the district to close all schools on Tuesday, with additional closures to be determined this afternoon, school officials said Monday.

Globally, more than 116,000 people have been infected and more than 4,200 people have died from the new coronavirus, Johns Hopkins reported Tuesday afternoon. Of that total, more than 80,000 confirmed cases are in China, while the entire United States has 805 confirmed cases as of Tuesday afternoon. There have been 28 deaths in the U.S. have been tied to the virus outbreak.
