CCSD Students Win In Statewide Fire Safety Essay Contest

Two Cherokee County School District students have placed in the statewide National Fire Prevention Week essay contest!

CCSD’s Office of Safety & Security, in collaboration with Cherokee County Office of Fire & Emergency Services and Woodstock Fire Department, sponsored the district level of the statewide poster and essay contests.

National Fire Prevention Week was October 6-12, 2019, and the theme was: “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”

CCSD students in kindergarten through fifth grade were invited to enter a poster contest with designs celebrating the theme, and students in sixth through 12th grade were invited to write essays.

The top three CCSD entries for each K-5 grade and for middle and high schools were entered into the State contest sponsored by Georgia’s Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.

Two CCSD students won at the State competition: Sequoyah HS ninth-grader Heath Hembree placed first in the essay contest, and E.T. Booth MS eighth-grader Anvita Rautray placed third!

The CCSD district-level winners are:

• First Grade: Hallie Berkland, Bascomb ES; Bryce Hall, R.M. Moore ES STEM Academy; Beau Houchens, Bascomb ES
• Second Grade: Dolly Gabriel, R.M. Moore ES STEM Academy; Anthony Silva, R.M. Moore ES STEM Academy
• Third Grade: Lola Brown, Boston ES; Katie Blanchard, Boston ES; Trysta Donehoo, Oak Grove ES Fine Arts Academy
• Fourth Grade: Sofia Daniel, R.M. Moore ES STEM Academy; Maricarmen Gomez-Perez, Hasty ES Fine Arts Academy; Erin Shearer, Hasty ES Fine Arts Academy
• Fifth Grade: Olivia Ni, Bascomb ES; Alexis Barker, Hasty ES Fine Arts Academy; Gustavo Strougo, Bascomb ES
• Middle/High School: Anvita Rautray, E.T. Booth MS; Vanosha Moghaddasi, E.T. Booth MS; Heath Hembree, Sequoyah HS

The students were recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools at the School Board’s October meeting. The State winners will be honored at luncheon this week in Forsyth.
