Cherokee Charter Academy Names New Principal
April Wallis will succeed Scott O'Prey, who resigned last month to relocate to Florida.
CANTON, GA -- Cherokee Charter Academy as tapped its assistant principal to take over the helm at its Sixes Road facility in Canton.
April Wallis has been promoted to serve as the new principal, the school announced this week. Wallis has been employed in a "variety of positions" since Cherokee Charter Academy opened in 2011, the school notes.
"Ms. Wallis has built strong relationships with the families and students at Cherokee Charter Academy over the years and we are confident that her enthusiasm and experience will provide students with the best opportunity for success in the coming year,” said Erin Lanoue, regional director of education for Georgia schools.

Wallis' appointment comes after former Principal Scott O'Prey announced his resignation in a letter sent home to parents on June 1. O'Prey resigned to relocate to Florida, the school previously said.
Danny Dukes, chairperson of the Cherokee Charter Academy Inc., said he's also confident in the selection of Wallis to lead the school.

“As a strong leader with history at the school, Ms. Wallis is well aware of the challenges and opportunities facing students, staff and families and highly capable of bringing our school forward to continue the journey toward greatness,” he added.
Wallis earned her bachelor's degree in middle grades education from Shorter University and her master's degree in educational leadership from Kennesaw State University. She also obtained her specialists degree in leadership for learning from KSU.
The first day of the 2017-18 school year will be July 31 for Cherokee Charter Academy. The school is part of Charter Schools USA Inc. network of schools. The school is governed by the Cherokee Charter Academy, Inc., which consists of local community board members: Danny Dukes, Kim Cochran, Susan Imrie, Wendy Prichard, Josh Fuder and Mark Johnson. Along with Cherokee Charter Academy, Charter Schools USA also manages Coweta Charter Academy.
