Cherokee Fire Sergeant Receives Letter Of Commendation

CANTON, GA — Cherokee County Fire Chief Tim Prather recently presented Sgt. Nick Spain with a Letter of Commendation at the conclusion of the promotion ceremony Sept. 5 at the Cherokee County Fire Training Center.

Prather told the audience that the fire department’s vision statement says that they are committed to providing a superior level of service to the citizens they serve. Prather invited Spain to the front to read an email that he received Aug. 28 from a citizen.

The email was sent by Chyenne Weslowski who lives with her almost 2-year old-daughter in the Walden Crossing Apartments in Canton.

“When I arrived home today, fire truck No. 3 was in front of my apartment building. When I got my child out, I had a ton of groceries that I couldn’t carry all at once," Weslowski wrote. "It was at that time that firefighter Spain was so kind to offer me help in carrying in my groceries while I carried my daughter. Upon entering my home, he heard a sound coming from my smoke detectors, indicating that my batteries were low and needed to be replaced. It was at that time that Mr. Spain proceeded to get batteries and change them out for me. I am overwhelmed with just how nice this man was. To help me in and change my batteries, I cannot thank him enough. I am so delighted to have first responders such as him! Please let him know that just that small gesture went a long way, and I am forever grateful."

After reading the letter of commendation, Prather thanked Spain for going “above and beyond” in assisting the citizens and keeping them safe.
