The gift to Fort Hawkins was to celebrate and honor ancestors from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and to those who fought and served at Fort Hawkins.

The portrait was donated to the C.A.R. by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association for the purpose to be donated to a landmark of historical significance.
