Applications are now posted online for the seat, which was vacated on Wednesday following the selection of Kyla Cromer to serve as board chair. Cromer succeeds Janet Read, who resigned last month to accept a new job with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Cromer was initially appointed to the seat in June 2014. She was subsequently elected to the post later that year during a special election to serve out the term of former board member Kelly Trim, who had to resign after she was convicted of felony false statement charges.

District 1 encompasses Holly Springs, BridgeMill, parts of south Canton and neighborhoods along Sixes Road.

Under Georgia law, if a vacancy occurs more than two years and 90 days before an elected official’s term is set to expire, an interim appointment would be made until a special election could be held in conjunction with a general election to fill the seat.

If the vacancy occurs less than two years and 90 days before the term expires, the governing body can appoint a successor until the term expires.

To be considered, the application must be completed, signed before a notary public and received by the Cherokee County school board attorney on or before 5 p.m. Aug. 19.

Application must be delivered to Roach, Caudill and Gunn LLP, 111 West Main St., Canton, GA 30114 on or before 5 p.m. Aug. 19.

The applications will be considered at the Sept. 3 meeting. Applicants should note that it’s possible that the school board may decide not to make an appointment.

You can view and download the application on the school district’s website.
