Cherokee Veterans Park Opens Aug. 14 To Residents
The park will include natural and artificial turf fields, a playground, skate park, pickleball and tennis courts and walking paths.
CANTON, GA -- A new park for residents living on the east side of Cherokee County will soon be up and running, providing these citizens a place to play and mingle with their neighbors.
Cherokee Veterans Park will open to the public on Monday, Aug. 14, the county said. The facility at 7345 Cumming Highway is situated on 149 acres across from Water Tank Road in the Macedonia community.
Phase 1 of the project includes one artificial turf athletic field, two natural grass athletic fields, two tennis courts, two pickleball courts, a playground, skate park, a one-third paved walking path near the playground and a 1.3-mile paved walking path around the park.

Cherokee Recreation and Parks Director Bryan Reynolds notes the natural grass fields will not be open for a few more weeks to allow more time for the grass to grow in.
"We ask the public to help us by staying off those fields until they are opened," he added.

For the future, possible additions to the park include a baseball/softball complex, more tennis and pickleball courts, a large community pavilion and a recreation center. These possibilities will depend on the availability of funds, however.
Also included in the first phase is a large open meadow with space allowed for a future memorial recognizing the service and sacrifice of our military veterans.
The county in January 2016 approved a $11.7 million contract in Reeve's Young, Inc. to construct phase one of the project. The project, including property acquisition, design and the first phase of construction, was funded with proceeds from the November 2008 voter-approved parks bond.
With more than 75 acres for active use, Cherokee Veterans Park will be one of the largest active parks in Cherokee County. By comparison, Hobgood Park has less than 40 developed acres and JJ Biello Park has about 60 acres developed for active use.
