County Warns of Changes To Large Truck Ordinance

Cherokee commissioners have updated its list of roads and bridges thru-trucks are prohibited from using.

Cherokee County is warning motorists behind the wheel of so-called large trucks that they cannot drive through or across certain roads and bridges.

The Cherokee County Commission at its July 7 meeting passed a revised truck ordinance, which updated the list of roads and bridges thru-trucks are prohibited from utilizing.

Chief Marshal Ron Hunton said the agency is currently enforcing these changes.  ”No Thru Truck” signs have been posted on the following roads:

  • Scott Road
  • Butterworth Road
  • Bart Manous Road
  • Reavis Mountain Road
  • Marvin Land Road
  • Lower Creighton Road
  • Haley Farms Road
  • East Cherokee Drive from Holly Springs Parkway to S.R. 20/Cumming Highway
  • East Cherokee Drive from S.R. 20/Cumming Highway to Creekside Way

Bridges and/or culverts impacted by the revision include:

  • Bells Ferry Road crossing Little River
  • Epperson Road crossing Canton Creek
  • George Gray Road crossing Shoal Creek
  • Kemp Drive crossing Kellogg Creek
  • Leo Taylor Road crossing Sharp Mountain Creek tributary
  • Lyon Dairy Road crossing Sharp Mountain Creek
  • Transart Parkway Crossing Toonigh Creek
  • Upper Dowdy Mill Road Crossing Sharp Mountain Creek
  • Union Hill Road crossing Mill Creek
  • Union Hill Road crossing Canton Creek
  • Waters Road crossing Mill Creek

The county defines a large truck as a vehicle having a gross weight that exceeds 36,000 pounds, a length in excess of 30 feet or has more than three axles.

The ordinance calls for fines up to $1,000 or 60 days in jail for each offense.
