CANTON, GA — A Cherokee County School District student has been named to a prestigious public education advisory group.

Creekview High School sophomore Callahan Pace is one of only eight high school students from across the state selected to serve on the Georgia School Boards Association Youth Advisory Council.

The program was established to give Georgia high school students the opportunity to provide meaningful input to school board members, according to Georgia School Boards Association, through meetings that culminate in Council recommendations on topics ranging from academic programs to school climate. The application process is open every February to students statewide.

“We’re so proud of Cal for this honor and know he will represent Creekview and Cherokee Schools with excellence and pride,” Superintendent of Schools Brian Hightower said. “Our school board greatly values student input, and we look forward to hearing what he and his fellow student leaders share with Georgia School Boards Association through their service on the council.”

Through their service, council members also enhance their leadership and public speaking skills and improve their school community, with a focus this year on topics including school climate and safety, students’ social and emotional needs and college and career opportunities.

Georgia School Boards Association’s goal is to gather student feedback “to help aid school board members in their decision-making and implementation processes; through this program, we hope that students and school board members can achieve greater awareness regarding academic programs and school climate.”

Callahan will be recognized by Georgia School Boards Association at a celebration on Thursday at SunTrust Park and by the Cherokee County School Board and Hightower at the School Board’s Dec. 12 meeting.
