Creekview High Literary Team Wins State Championship

CANTON, GA -- Cherokee County School District students excelled at the Georgia High School Association’s State Championships for Literary Teams, with one team winning the overall prize and nine students earning first-place awards.

The Creekview High School Literary Team won the AAAAAA State Championship, with Sequoyah High School placing as runner-up.

Both teams had students place in multiple categories at the 6A State competition, including two individual State champion titles for Creekview, and one individual and one group first-place win for Sequoyah. Events include both individual and group competitions in public speaking, singing and writing.

From Creekview High School, senior Riley Ortega is the state champion for Girls Solo, and junior Adam Morrison is the state champion for Dramatic Oral Interpretation. Junior Sophie Morrison earned second in state for Humorous Oral Interpretation, with senior Emily McGhee winning second in state for Argumentative Essay. Wyatt Brooks, Max Evangelista, Cameron Holbrook and Nate Seman together won second in the state for Boys Quartet. Mackensie Hogan, Riley Ortega and Anna Grace Sutherland together placed third in the state for Girls Trio, and senior Wyatt Brooks won fourth in Boys Solo. Their coach is teacher and school choral director Scott Martin.

From Sequoyah High School, senior Max Frye is the state champion for Extemporaneous Speaking – International; and the state champion-Boys Quartet members are: seniors Aaron Whittle and Patrick Fagan, and juniors Zane Durham and Jace Nichols. Fagan also placed third in the state in Boys Solo, and senior Jack Forbes won third in Extemporaneous Speaking - Domestic. Their coach is teacher and school choral director Josh Markham.

In the AAAAAAA Division, Cherokee High School placed fourth in the state, with one individual state champion, while Woodstock High School also earned an individual state champion title.

Cherokee High School senior Rylee Holland is the state champion for Extemporaneous Speaking – Domestic. Senior Jessica Tabickman placed second in state for Oral Interpretation – Dramatic, while senior John Peterson placed third for Extemporaneous Speaking – International.

Woodstock High School sophomore Sophia Abbot won the state champion title for Personal Essay, while junior Zakwan Khan placed third in the state for Rhetorical Essay.
