Canton and Cherokee County residents now have until Dec. 12 to nominate a person, business or organization for the awards.

The Coosa River Basin Initiative has extended the deadline for residents to submit nominations for its Greenie Awards.

The deadline is now Friday, Dec. 12 for the awards, which will be presented during CRBI’s Green Gala.

The event is set for April 2, 2015, at Barnsley Gardens Resort in Adairsville. The awards will recognize individuals, businesses, industries, local governments and organizations making extraordinary efforts to protect the upper Coosa River basin, which is considered to be the most biologically diverse river basin in North America

“This is an opportunity to celebrate what’s being done in Coosa River communities to improve our quality of life and keep our rivers clean,” said David Tucker, CRBI executive director. “Our hope is that by recognizing these efforts and promoting them we can enlist more people and businesses in similar efforts.”

A panel of experts and CRBI staff will review the nominations and determine the winners who will be announced in mid-January. The winners will be recognized at the event, which will feature a cocktail hour, silent and live auctions and a formal dinner and awards ceremony at the Kingston-area resort.

The upper Coosa River basin includes the Georgia counties of Lumpkin, Dawson, Fannin, Pickens, Gilmer, Cherokee, Forsyth, Fulton, Cobb, Paulding, Polk, Bartow, Floyd, Chattooga, Walker, Whitfield and Murray as well as Cherokee County in Alabama. Entities or individuals living or doing business in these areas are eligible for the awards.
