Device Monitors Temperature Inside K-9 Vehicles

All five vehicles in the Cherokee Sheriff's Office's K-9 Unit have been outfitted with the Hot-N-Pop Pro devices.

CANTON, GA -- The Cherokee Sheriff's Office just rolled out a tool designed to prevent police canines from being left inside a hot car.

The agency's K-9 unit has purchased a device called Hot-N-Pop Pro for each of the five vehicles belonging to the division. It works by monitoring the temperature on both sides of the kennel inside the vehicle.

A K-9 handler can set a temperature that if reached inside the kennel causes the siren and blue lights to go off, the sheriff's office said Friday.

If the vehicle is turned off and a rear door of the vehicle is not opened, the horn will blow every two minutes.

Also, when the vehicle is turned off and the temperature reaches the preset level, the siren and lights will begin to go off along with the horn.

The device also includes a pager that the K-9 officer wears. An alert is sent to the pager if the temperature reaches the preset level. Each device cost the sheriff's office about $1,400.
