Driver Takes Out Power Pole In Canton Wreck

Eyewitnesses say the motorist veered off the road and hit a stop sign before striking a power pole head-on.

CANTON, GA -- A motorist escaped injury Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash along Bells Ferry Road near Canton.

Crews with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to the crash around 3:15 p.m. Oct. 4 near Bells Ferry Road's intersection with Wooten Drive.

When first responders arrived on the scene, they found a silver Ford Explorer appeared to have struck a power pole. That collision, the agency said in a press release, resulted in power lines falling onto vehicles along the road.

Cobb EMC crews were also dispatched to the scene to turn off the power in the lines so Cherokee firefighters could remove the driver from the car.

"According to an eyewitness, the driver was heading towards Lake Allatoona, went off the roadway (and) hit a stop sign before hitting the power pole head-on," Cherokee County fire said.

The 58-year-old driver, an Acworth resident, was conscious and alert and was able to talk with firefighters until the lines could be removed.

Once those lines were removed, the driver was able to exit the passenger vehicle on his own accord. The motorist was check out, and was later retrieved from the scene of the crash by a family member.

Both lanes were blocked until the wreckage was cleared and the power line was repaired. No other injuries were reported and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash.
