Elections Chief: Canton Special Election Recount Could Happen Monday

Before any recount could occur in the Ward 3 race, the Cherokee County Board of Elections would have to certify the results.

It could be early next week before a recount of the results from Tuesday’s special election to fill the Canton City Council Ward 3 seat could occur.

That’s according to interim Cherokee County Elections Supervisor Kim Stancil, who said the county’s Board of Elections on Friday will meet to certify the results from the Nov. 4 general election.

Stancil said the office still has military and overseas ballots to review and the board will also have to review provisional ballots before the election results are certified.

Stancil said the recount would most likely occur Monday morning.

Farris Yawn defeated fellow challenger James Busi in the race to replace Glen Cummins, who was tapped to serve as the Canton city manager.

Yawn won the race with 49.97 percent, or 2,235 votes. Busi garnered 49.21 percent, or 2,201 votes. Yawn‘s lead is a mere 34 votes.

Busi on Wednesday said he’s verbally communicated and put into writing that he intends to seek a recount. If the results were greater than 1 percent, he noted he’d be more than happy to move on and congratulate his opponent.

However, with the results so close, Busi said he’s “entitled to ask for a recount.”

“I’m sure Farris would do the same thing,” he added.
