Fire Services Agreement Back on Canton Agenda

The city and Cherokee County are working to come up with a joint operation venture for Fire Station No. 9.

The Canton City Council at its meeting on Thursday will consider an intergovernmental agreement with Cherokee County for the operation of the city’s new fire station.

The agreement, which was tabled in January, would outline how both entities would proceed with operations for Fire Station No. 9. The new station is slated to be constructed near the entrance of the Laurel Canyon subdivision along Reinhardt College Parkway.

Canton leaders last month delayed the agreement to allow Canton Fire Chief Dean Floyd and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Chief Tim Prather to collaborate on future needs to address growth patterns for both agencies.

Other items on the agenda include needed repairs to its new Council Chambers, the second reading to establish a Historic Preservation Commission and Historic District and discuss construction bids for Fire Station No. 9.

Mayor Gene Hobgood will also give his annual State of the City Address before the meeting. The address was postponed last month due to technical difficulties.

The council’s meeting will start at 6 p.m. on the third floor at Canton City Hall. Readers can view the entire agenda online.
