Five Apply For Vacant School Board Seat

The Cherokee County School Board has quite a few people to choose from if it decides to fill the vacant District 1 seat.

That’s because five residents have submitted applications to be considered for the post, which was vacated when Kyla Cromer was tapped to serve as school board chair following the resignation of Janet Read.
The candidates are: Sanford Chandler, who is the former president of Chattahoochee Technical College and most recently retired from the Technical College System of Georgia; Rob Logan, city manager and finance director with the city of Holly Springs; Kelly Poole, PTA member and bookkeeper; and retired teachers James Nicholson and William Wuth.

District 1 encompasses Holly Springs, BridgeMill, parts of south Canton and neighborhoods along Sixes Road.
The applications will be considered at the board’s Sept. 3 meeting; it is possible that the school board may decide not to make an appointment.
The applicants at a glance
Sanford Chandler
- Age: 64
- Occupation: retired assistant commissioner with the Technical College System of Georgia; former president of Chattahoochee Technical College.
- Education: bachelor of science and master’s in vocational and adult education from Auburn University; doctor of occupational education from the University of Georgia.
- Family: wife Desiree; four children.
- Community organization: member of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce where he previously served on its Board of Directors; participated in PTA organizations while his children attended Cherokee County schools.
Rob Logan
- Age: 48
- Occupation: city manager/finance director, city of Holly Springs; former finance director/interim city manager with the city of Canton.
- Education: BBA in accounting from Kennesaw State University.
- Family; wife Pam (teacher at Sixes Elementary); four children.
- Community involvement: ex-officio board member with the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce; Cherokee FOCUS; The Children’s Haven; graduate of Leadership Cherokee, and has also served on that organization’s steering committee.
James Nicholson
- Age: 62
- Occupation: retired educator; former part-time preschool director at Canton First United Methodist Church; former behavior consultant at Devereux.
- Education: master’s and education specialist degrees from the former West Georgia College; bachelor’s degree from Florida Southern; and associate’s degree from Columbia State.
- Family: wife Linda (teacher at Creekview High School); two children.
- Community involvement: Canton Golf Club; has served in PTA and PTSA groups, school advisory councils, booster clubs and Special Olympics.
Kelly Poole
- Age: 45
- Occupation: provides bookkeeping and accounting services for a tax attorney
- Education: BBA in accounting from St. Mary’s University
- Family: husband James; two children.
- Community organizations: Cherokee County Republican Women’s club; member of the PTA where she’s held several elected officer positions; co-president of the Woodstock High School Track Booster Club; Georgia PTA Finance Committee member;
William Wuth
- Age: 74
- Occupation: retired public and private school teacher; currently teaches Language Arts and literature once a week to roughly 45 home schooled students.
- Education: graduated in 1978 from Oregon State University with a master of science degree; obtained a master’s in education in 1966 from Southern Oregon College.
- Family: wife Cathryn; two adult children.
- Community involvement: served as a PTA member while children were in school.
