Gas Leak Contained in Downtown Canton
About 25 people were evacuated from roughly 12 businesses Thursday morning.
CANTON, GA -- Crews with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services have capped a gas leak that forced several businesses to evacuate Thursday morning in downtown Canton.
The agency received the call around 9:30 a.m. Jan. 12 of the leak in the vicinity of North Street between Lee and Church Streets.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and could smell the gas. The Cherokee County Hazardous Materials Team was also dispatched to the scene, and the first responders began to seek out the source of the smell.

In the meantime, firefighters evacuated about 25 people from roughly 12 businesses that were located in the immediate area. A portion of North Street was also blocked off to vehicular traffic.
Cherokee County firefighters located the source of the leak, which was coming from an underground propane gas tank. Firefighters plugged the leak until representatives of the gas company could arrive and begin repairs.

No injuries were reported and North Street reopened just before 11 a.m.
