The granite monument is a functional, interactive flag containing The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag in braille.

“Our chapter, which was organized in February 1985, carries out the important mission of the National Society here on the local level,” said Chapter Regent Loriann White. “We’re excited to demonstrate the vibrancy and contributions of today’s DAR by serving our local community as daughters have been doing throughout the nation for 125 years.

“There are a staggering number of veterans and young service men and women who suffer from ocular trauma injuries and premature blindness. Donating a Braille Flag is our way to give back to those who are and have valiantly served so they may feel the raised language of freedom on the American Flag…once more.”

There are nearly 180,000 members of the DAR, serving in approximately 3,000 chapters across the nation and in several foreign countries. More than 940,000 women have joined the organization since its founding 125 years ago.

White added that in Cherokee County, the Hightower Trail Chapter supports community events, promotes patriotic celebrations, sends care packages to active military and personnel, records bible records and cemetery preservation, donates to local and regional woman’s shelters and promotes American history in schools with an essay contest throughout the year.

“We are proud to carry out DAR’s mission to celebrate our American way of life,” she said. “All women who can document descent from a Revolutionary War Patriot are encouraged to consider the many benefits of joining. We are eager to welcome new members to our chapter, and we have volunteers available to help them research and complete their genealogy in order to apply for membership.”

The Georgia National Cemetery is located at 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive in Canton.
