Habitat, Schoen Insulation Services Provide Home For Canton Family

Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia recently held a dedication ceremony for the Scoggins, a family of four.

Last Saturday, Habitat for Humanity – North Central Georgia held a Dedication Ceremony for the Scoggins family whose home is located on Arliss Drive in Canton. This is the second of four homes that Habitat has built on this street. It was an emotional moment for the family and lots of tears were shed as the family talked about the challenges they have faced over the years. “We are extremely grateful to Schoen Insulation Services for their sponsorship and to all of the volunteers who helped build our home”, stated Polly Scoggins. “We are so blessed to have a place to call home.”

Joshua and Polly, who have two children, Angelina (9) and Catalina (3), have been through some difficult times over the last few years. Joshua injured his leg at work in 2007 and has endured many surgeries over the years. In 2013, he was fitted with a prosthesis for his lower leg but is unable to work as he continues his physical therapy with the Shepard Center. Polly works at the local Home Depot store.

“Josh and Polly Scoggins have suffered and persevered greatly after Josh lost his leg in a construction accident,” stated Russ Hayes, Chief Executive Officer at Habitat North Central Georgia. “Our house sponsor, Stephen Schoen, was so moved that he not only provided the funding for their home but generously insisted on donating new furnishings.”

Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry that builds affordable homes for purchase by low-income families who demonstrate the capacity for responsible homeownership. Since its inception in 1995, Habitat-NCG has completed 269 homes serving an estimated 1,000 family members in the North Fulton area and Cherokee, Dawson and Forsyth Counties. Habitat-NCG does not give away its homes. Partner families, who earn 30% to 60% of the Atlanta area median income, purchase their homes at or near appraised value utilizing 30-year no-interest financing provided by Habitat. In addition, each partner family is required to attend educational classes and perform 200-300 hours of construction “sweat equity.” Family members work side by side with the volunteers, sponsors, and Habitat staff to build their homes. Habitat-NCG’s slogan is “A Hand Up, Not a Handout.” For more information concerning Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia, please visit www.habitat-ncg.org.
