Heavy Rains Wash Away Portion of Highway In Canton

Georgia Department of Transportation crews are working to make repairs to the road along S.R. 108 near S.R. 20.

Canton, GA -- One lane on a major highway has been closed after heavy rains moving through the area late Tuesday evening washed away a portion of the road.

Crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation are working to make repairs to a segment of S.R. 108/Fincher Road in the Sutallee community, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said.

Mohamed Arafa, spokesperson with Georgia DOT, noted the damage from the weather is affecting one of the two westbound lanes and the shoulder on the road near its intersection with S.R. 20.

“Once rain stops, Georgia DOT will sprint into action to repair the damage to the state highway and reopen it to traffic,” he said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Arafa said a crew has “been working feverishly to have the affected lane back open” by 5 p.m. Feb. 24 in time for the evening rush our.
