Human Remains Found Behind Cherokee County Home

BREAKING: the remains were discovered in a wooded area behind a home on Purcell Lane in southeast Cherokee County.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — Human remains were discovered early Thursday afternoon behind a home in southeast Cherokee County, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies were dispatched to the call around 12:51 p.m. July 5 to a residence in the 2100 block of Purcell Lane, which is located off Birmingham Highway near the Fulton County border.

The remains were found by the property owners in a wooded area behind the home, Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Marianne Kelley said Saturday in a press release.

The remains have been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for official identification and to determine a cause and manner of death, Sgt. Kelley said.

Cherokee Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division detectives remain at the scene looking for and collecting any evidence. Sgt. Kelley notes the property in question is about 10 acres, and includes a pond, creek, several pastures and an "extensive amount of wooded area."
