Job Fair Funds Work-Based Learning Scholarship Program

SMYRNA, GA -- Over a dozen employers have already signed up to take part in a job fair designed for veterans, people with disabilities, students and other job seekers.

The event, sponsored by the Cobb-Cherokee Employer Committee, will be held 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13 at the Smyrna Community Center located at 200 Village Green in Smyrna.
About 23 employers are expected to participate. Employers will pay a $200 tax-deductible fee to have a booth at the job fair, and all proceeds from the job fair will be used to fund a work-based learning scholarship program sponsored by the employer committee.

The scholarship will be awarded in March to a senior who is graduating in May with at least a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) from a high school in Cobb or Cherokee counties or the Marietta City schools.
The scholarship winner must be enrolled in a work-based learning program in high school and must be planning to attend college or a trade program.
Employers already signed up to participate in the job fair include: American Family Day Corporation, Chattahoochee Technical College, Cobb County School District Transportation Department, Futren Corporation, Ken Stanton Music, Land Care, McCorkle Nurseries, New World Van Lines, Republic Services, UL Transaction Security, Unlimited Lawn Care, Wellstar Health System, White Wolf Group and Wilkinson Real Estate Advisors.
Other employers wanting to register should contact Sharon Holliday at the Georgia Department of Labor’s Cobb-Cherokee Career Center at (770) 528-6100.
The Cobb-Cherokee Employer Committee is comprised of employers in Cobb and Cherokee counties. Employer committees are groups of local business representatives who establish and maintain working relationships between employers and GDOL career centers.
At the job fair, applicants should bring plenty of resumes and be prepared to fill out employer applications and interview for available jobs. Attendees are also encouraged to dress appropriately to improve their opportunities for employment.
