Jobless Rate in Cherokee County Rose in June

The unemployment rate in Cherokee County rose a bit in June, according to data released Thursday by the state department of labor.

The rate in Cherokee climbed two-tenths of a percentage point to 5 percent last month, up from 4.8 in May. The rate in the county in June 2014 was 6 percent, the data showed.

June rates for surrounding counties include: Bartow at 6.2 percent; Cobb at 5.4 percent; Dawson at 5.4 percent; Forsyth at 4.8 percent; Fulton at 6.2 percent; and Pickens at 5.5 percent.

The labor department said metro Atlanta’s rate was up one-tenth of a point in June -- 6.0 percent, up from 5.9 in May, but considerably less than 7.3, the rate for June 2014.

The rate rose as the number of jobs declined and new layoffs, as measured by unemployment insurance claims, increased, the labor department said.

Metro Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.3 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 8.2.

Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for June was 6.1 percent, down from 6.3 in May. It was 7.3 percent in June 2014.
