Mayor's Recycling Challenge Winners Announced

The challenge is coordinated by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's Going Green Committee.

CANTON, GA -- The fifth Mayor's Recycling Challenge has wrapped up, and the city of Woodstock came out on top.

The city collected the most recycling, which totaled 567,746 pounds. It was followed by Canton at 267,588 pounds, Ball Ground at 125,860 pounds, Waleska at 113,840 pounds and and Holly Springs at 43,360 pounds.

The combined total collected by all participating cities was 1.1 million pounds, which is a 20-percent increase over the previous year.

The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Going Green Committee sponsored the event, which encourages residents to recycle during the months of June and July.

The winning city for total pounds recycled, winning city for most pounds collected per capita and the winning city for highest percentage increase over last year were announced during the Chamber's September Good Morning Cherokee breakfast.

For the fifth consecutive year, Waleska collected the most recycling per capita with 141.95 pounds per resident, as determined based on 2015 U.S. Census population estimates. Additional per capita totals included

  • Ball Ground – 73.17 pounds/resident
  • Woodstock – 18.99 pounds/resident
  • Canton – 10.52 pounds/resident
  • Holly Springs – 4.05 pounds/resident

The city of Ball Ground was recognized for having the highest percentage increase of collected recyclables over the previous year. This year the city collected 125,860 pounds, which is a 47.62-percent increase over last year's 85,260 pounds.

The mission of the Chamber's Going Green initiative is to encourage the community to implement green practices that conserve community resources while helping businesses thrive.
